Friends of the Gala Banner

Welcome to the Durham Miners’ Association official website.

This site has been established to publicise the activity of the Durham Miners Association and in particular to raise material support for the Durham Miners Gala which continues to grow year on year.

In the coming weeks and months we aim to build this site so that it truly reflects the rich heritage of the Durham Coalfield not just as an interest in the past but as a guide to the present and future struggle of working people.

We hope you enjoy the experience, visit us regularly and join the Friends Of The Durham Miners Gala.

Gala Just Gets Bigger and Bigger.

This year’s Durham Miners’ Gala was the biggest the City has seen since the early 1960s when The Durham Coalfield had over 100 working mines.
It was estimated that over 100,000 flocked onto the racecourse behind 158 banners of which 65 were Durham miners’ banners, 12 miners’ banners from other coalfields and 81 from other unions. A total of 65 bands marched the banners in creating one of the most spectacular displays of music, colour and celebration ever seen on Big Meeting Day.
A full report of the speeches illustrated with a picture gallery of photographs will be sent out to all the Friends of the Gala who have contributed £24 or more in November.
For those who were unable to buy a copy of the full colour Souvenir Gala Brochure containing 96 pages of photographs, articles and greetings can obtain a copy from the shop for £3.00 inc p&p. Click here.
